Why would early temples have been much like houses?

Temples are overtime developed with the huge structures and they are mainly built in the steps and shapes of the pyramids.

Early temple were also much like the houses and they become the small shrines which is made up of the unbaked bricks in the building expect the outer walls that is present in and out at the regular intervals.
