This question is a little confusing. However, I will answer based on my understanding of the question. I think the question is: Why would the narrator not see an animal?

I think this all depends on the setting. If the story is set in a jungle, then a narrator may not see the animal as it blends into its enviroment.

Maybe the animals was being quiet so the animal can't be heard.
