Why would you need to use more insecticides in monoculture?

Problem with monocultures is that if an insect likes crop that insect has large food supply to draw from all in one place.
Conversely a field consisting of variety of plants doesn't offer large block of food for insect so it will not get the nutrients it needs to survive and thrive further.

Monoculture is planting all of the same plant/crop. Since you have all the exact same plant instead of a variety, the pests and insects attracted to your plant will all be the same. Also, there will be alot more of them. Since there are alot more insects in monoculture than when you have a variety, it takes alot more insecticides to get rid of the pests/insects.
