Answer:

At least up until the early 2000s, in the UK (and I might generalise that to ‘the West’) animated shows, or ‘Cartoons' filled up the 3pm-5pm slot on national television channels. This was because children would return home from school, and switch on the TV. The content had been reviewed, sanitised, and would reach children on their level, but was usually not challenging. I remember comfortably watching a children's anime at the time called "Cardcaptors" which involved some kids running around catching fantastical creatures. Great.

My feeling is that this time slot was semi-deliberate to allow parents to leave their children in front of the TV and get on with other tasks. As a result, the shows did not include anything to keep adults interested. AKA, “just for kids".

Imagine my surprise aged 17, then, when I hunted down the Japanese version of "Cardcaptors" for nostalgia, and realised that Western broadcasters had deleted several scenes and completely changed the story. Suddenly there was unrequited love among children, a surreptitious gay relationship between older characters, and a much darker undertone to the whole story. Something Western broadcasters decided was no longer suitable for children watching unsupervised TV on a weekday afternoon. So they butchered it.

I am a big anime lover... ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
