It directly combines with coke to form zinc and a mixture of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
ZnO + C ------> CO + Zn
CO + O -------> CO2

● Explanation -
- This process of obtaining zinc from its oxide with help of coke is called as smelting.
- Zinc oxide is reduced to zinc by heating with coke.

- Zinc is led off as vapour which is then cooled and collected.
