Because Zinc is more reactive than Hydrogen.

Cr7andLm10: We can use carbon to reduce the oxides of metals below aluminium in the Reactivity Series. Because of this, carbon is used in the extraction of zinc, iron, and lead. ... The extraction of metals from ores can cause environmental problems.

Hey,

Zinc cannot be reduced using hydrogen as it is less reactive it wont displace Zinc from ZnO. Carbon which is more reactive than Zn can displace Zn from ZnO.

ZnO + C -----> Zn + CO

HOPE IT HELPS:-))
