Mahatma Gandhi in 1917, led the peasants in Kheda district, Gujarat in their struggle against the British. The peasants suffered from crop failure and plague in that region. The revenue could not be paid to the British and the peasants appealed for relaxation of the revenue which was not given by the British and in fact insisted that the farmers also pay the 23% increase in revenue that year. Thus under Mahatma Gandhi, they held a Satyagraha to protest against this unjust revenue policy of the British.
