What changes were made to the city of Delhi by the British after the revolt of 1857?

Expert Answer:

Changes made to the city of Delhi by the British after the revolt of 1857:

The British exiled the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar after the revolt, and his court was dismantled. Many of his palaces were razed to the ground, and several barracks were built for British troops.

The area around the Red Fort was cleared of gardens, pavilions and mosques because the British wanted the people in Delhi to forget their Mughal past.

Most mosques were either destroyed or put to other uses. People were not allowed to worship in the Jama Masjid for the next five years.

One-third of the city was demolished by the British, and most of the city’s canals were filled up.

Later, in 1870, the western walls of the old city were destroyed to construct a railway line and to expand the city
