Because of RH factor (Rhesus Factor) which plays role in pregnency.
If the wife is Rh(-ve) and husband is Rh(+ve), their first child will be successfully born but mother's body generates certain antigens against the Rh(+ve) factor of child and mother is pregnant for 2nd time, the antigens generated when 1st child was there acts upon the fetus of 2nd child and can eventually be fatal to the 2nd fetus.
