1.“Urban revolution” is a term introduced by V. Gordon Childe, an eminent Old World prehistorian, to describe the process by which preliterate agriculturists living in villages and towns first came to form larger, more complex, civilized societies.

2. Urban Revolution was coined by Australian archaeologist V. Gordon Childe in his 1936 book Man Makes Himself.

3. Urban Revolution seems to have developed first in Mesopotamia, in ancient Sumer, as early as 5000 BP. Cities appeared somewhat later in Egypt.

4. Childe's concept in fact describes the transition from agricultural villages to state-level, urban societies. This change, which occurred independently in several parts of the world, is recognized as one of the most significant changes in human Sociocultural evolution.

5. The urban revolution ushered in a new era of population growth, complex urban development, and the development of such institutions as the bureaucratic state, warfare, architecture, and writing.
