By Archimedes’s principle, a body wholy or partially immersed in a fluid experiences an upthrust equal to the weight of the displaced fluid. The upthrust acts in opposite direction to the weight, consequently reducing the net effective weight.

Liquids generally have a higher density than air, so the amount to of air displaced by the solid in air, has less weight than the liquid of similar volume dispaced in the liquid. Therefore upthrust is always less in air than in a liquid
