Since mercury is a metal, it is incredibly dence therefore some heavy objects will float in its surface if it is in liquid state
hope it helps you.

Mercury is a metal and the speciality about it is that, it is the only metal that is present in liquid state at room temperature. Another thing to note about Mercury (Hg) is that it's density is very high. Its density is approximately 13 times greater than the density of water.
So, some objects which sink in water will float on the surface of Mercury, such as lead (Pb), silver (Ag), and steel. But, some pieces of gold sink as gold has higher density than that of Mercury.
