Will a solid substance expand on heating? Why?

Its like when heat a solid substance the particles gain heat and start moving faster (they convert thermal into kinetic energy) when they move vigorously and fast they hit near by particles causing them to be pushed a little faster away. Therefore the solid substance expands.
