NaCH3COO (s) ---------> Na + ( aq ) + CH3COO - ( aq )

CH3COO - ( aq ) + H2O ( l ) ---------> CH3COOH ( aq ) + OH-

The equation clearly states it is basic ( slightly ) , but the equation does not look quite complete . I will explain why about the new products :

CH3COOH + OH - . Since the new product CH3OOH itself still undergoes dissociation slightly into CH3COO - AND H + with water molecules . It should reduce OH- concentration slightly because the OH- concentration from sodium acetate is still lots larger than h+ ions concentration produced from acetate .
