Will an object made up of the same material having different shapes (one is bigger and the other one is smaller) have the same densities?
[for example- Will a steel needle and a block steel have the same densities?]

my confusion is that density is defined as mass per volume and also as the compactness of a substance,So if we look the above question according to density as mass upon volume the their densities will be different but if we look up to the question that density is the compactness of a substance,their densities will be the same as they are made up of the same element.

Please give an appropriate answer with proper explanation.

Density is generally regardless of how big or small a substance is and is neither dependant on its shape. A statue made of gold and a brick made of gold might have different masses and volume but they have same density.

By universal definition, density of a substance is the mass per unit volume.

D = Mass/Volume

For example

take a gold bar

of

mass 10000g

volume 520cm^3

now a gold necklace

of

mass 500g

volume 26cm^3

Interestingly in both the cases the density stood at 19.2 g. Though both the objects were of different size and shape, their density is found to be same.

Thus to explain in layman terms, density is how much something weighs, compares to how much space it takes up. It is constant for every material.

Mind you, two different materials of same shape and size do not have the same density. A one litre bottle of water would weigh 1 kg whereas the same bottle filled with gold will weigh 19.2 kg. Thus you have your answer.
