Will and Grant left school and walked eight tenths of a mile due south to Will’s
house to pick up his prize pig Petunia. Will, Grant and Petunia then walked four
tenths of a mile directly east to Grant’s house where his pooch named Pinocchio
was waiting to join the party. The two boys, Petunia and Pinocchio then walked
DIRECTLY back to school. How much shorter was their walk back to school than the walk to Grant’s house?

Given :  Will and Grant left school and walked eight tenths of a mile due south to Will’s house

Then walked four tenths of a mile directly east to Grant’s house

Then walked DIRECTLY back to school.

To Find : How much shorter was their walk back to school than the walk to Grant’s house

Solution:

School to Grant House via Will's house

Distance covered = 8/10  + 4/10   = 12/10  miles

= 1.2 miles

South and east are perpendicular to each other

Pythagoras' theorem: square on the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two perpendicular sides.

Hence direct distance between Grant’s house and school

= √(8/10)² + (4/10)²

= (4/10)√2² + 1²

= (4/10)√5

= 0.8944 miles

Distance saved  = 1.2  - 0.8944

= 0.3056 miles
