Because the poet was not able to understand the wordings of her song as it was something in another language,so the poet wanted someone to tell him what she sings.

She was singing in Scottish language but the poet is not aware of it... So he is puzzled..

And hence he makes guesses of the song, whether it is a sad song about far off things, war or any natural calamities and so on...
