Religion is actually very necessary for existence of societal order.

Humans have existed so long only because the belief of a higher power inspires fear and faith which is a powerful motivator.

People tend to act certain ways because societal customs and orders in which religion plays a big part.

If not the religions we find today, some form of religion will certainly exist. It is what keeps us grounded
