It is not only possible, sustainable development must replace the existing industrial model.  Take farming as an example.  Industrial agriculture as it is practiced now poisons the earth.  Between excessive use of petrochemical based fertilizers, to genetically modified seeds and animals, to the inhumane breeding of herbivorous animals using corn and meat as feed, the excessive use of sweeteners in packaged and processed foods, we are poisoning our earth, the goose that lays the golden egg.

Eliminate industrial agriculture.  Farm and develop sustainably.  Stop poisoning the earth.

Sustainable development is the organizing principle for meeting human development goals while at the same time sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services upon which the economy and society depend.
