Heya friend!!
Rajdeep here....

There are many definitions of Refractive index.

1. According to Snell's Law, the sine of angle of incidence and the sine of angle of refraction for a pair of given media is constant. This constant is called as refractive index.
So Refractive index = sin i / sin r

2. Refractive index of a medium is the ratio of speed of light in air to the speed of light in that medium.
So refractive index =
Speed of light in air/Speed of light in material medium.

3. Refractive index of a medium is equal to the ratio of its real depth and apparent depth.
Hence, refractive index = Real depth/Apparent depth.

4. Refractive index of a medium is the reciprocal of the sine of the critical angle for the pair of given media.
Or Refractive index = 1/sin ic
= cosec ic.
ic is the critical angle.

Thanks!!
