William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was born on 23 February 1868 in the small town of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The community had fewer than 50 Black people in the total population of 5000; therefore, racist attitudes were not as obvious as in the southern American state Initially Du Bois enjoyed an idyllic childhood and attended school and played with white children, but he felt the sting of discriminated as a young boy when a schoolmate refused his valentine based on his color. This rejection was a shock to him and played heavily on his bright mind. Thus began his zeal for the recognition and academic development of African Americans. An exceptional scholar, he longs to attend the prestigious Harvard University, but he lacks the finances to make his dream come true. He did however receive a scholarship to Fisk College.
