Explanation:

Given Wind blowing with a speed of 70 km/h. A flag hoisted on a ship along north-east direction. Of the ship moving at a rate of 80 km/h, what will be the direction of the flag hoisted on the ship

  • Now we have north and east direction and the wind is blowing in this direction. So it makes an angle of 45 degree and is the velocity of wind. Also the ship is moving at a rate of 80 km / hr and this is the velocity of ship.
  • We need to find velocity of wind relative to ship.
  • So velocity of wind relative to ship = velocity of wind – velocity of ship.
  •                                                            = V (wind) + (- V ) (ship)
  • Let the angle made by the resultant vector = β
  • Now total angle will be 90 + 45 = 135 degree
  • So tan β = velocity of ship x sin theta / velocity of wind + velocity of ship x sin theta
  •                = 80 sin (135) / 70 + 80 cos 135
  •               = 4.2114
  • So β = tan^-1 (4.2114)
  •         = 76.64 degree.
