Wind, rains, ice and even sunlight causes rocks to weather into soil, sediments and other  water soluble substances.

  • Weathering is a process of deterioration and disintegration of rocks (including soils and minerals) into smaller fragments, caused by the action of wind, water, ice and even sunlight.
  • Weathering is of three types: Mechanical, Chemical, and, Biological
  • Mechanical weathering: also known as physical weathering is caused by the natural forces operating on the earth which can change the rock physically. For example: wind, rain, thawing, sand, etc.
  • Chemical weathering: when the rocks undergo chemical reactions, formation of new substances takes place, such as minerals, soil, clay etc., it is known as chemical weathering. For example: action of acids on rocks.
  • Biological weathering: the weathering caused by living organisms such as plants, animals and microbes. For example: growth of weeds on rocks.
