Explanation:
MY FAVOURITE SEASON
Evgueny: - Hello Joe!
Joe: Hello Evgueny!
- How are you?
- I’m very well thank you. How are you?
- I am well but the weather is now in Saint Petersburg rather cold. We had today for example only +2 degrees Celsius. And it’s interesting for me: What is the weather now in Great Britain? And maybe you can tell me about the seasons in Great Britain. I would like to compare these seasons with Russian seasons, OK?
- OK.
- Ok….
- Sorry, did you have a question?
- Aha.
And my question is: what season is your favourite season and why?
- I think it has to be… I think it has to be the spring.
- Aha, OK.
And why?
- Because it comes straight after the long nights of winter and I suddenly feel happier.
- Aha.
- I’m a teacher and I feel much closer to the summer holidays.
- Ah, OK, yeah, yeah…
- One advantage that spring has over summer- it is not so hot.
- Aha, yes.
- The weather is pleasant, but it’s not hot.
- Aha.
- I’m not a great fan of it when it’s too hot.
- Aha, OK.
So, you don’t like for example summer, yeah?
- Well, I… It’s not my favourite…
- Aha.
- I mean I quite… I quite like the peace of it being spring, being able to be out.
- Aha.
- And It not being crowded, but because our summers can be so brief in England a lot of people are out straight away as soon as there’s good weather, and I guess I don’t like crowds, I don’t like being around too many people. Aha.
- So, it’s not my favourite season.
- OK.
- But it is very nice.
- Aha.
- It is very nice, but I prefer the spring.
- OK.
And what is the worst season for you?
- Errm… Ooh…
- Maybe winter or not?
- It depends…now winter…I think now, yeah…maybe winter because the days are shorter.
- Yeah…
- There’s normally…I don’t know the weather is less of a role in the season. I’ve got lots of relatives…I have to spend a lot of time buying presents for them over the weekends…
- Aha.
- And preparing for Christmas… Yeah, and it’s too cold and I don’t know, my mood isn’t so good. There;s a condition I think a medical condition that a lot of people get in the colder months. And I think…
- Maybe you have a lot of work at school?..
- Definitely, there are… there’s always a lot of work. And normally during the holidays I can catch up with my work.
- Aha.
- But during Christmas because it’s so busy I can’t. And I mean on top of that there’s the cold and short days which just make it even worse…
- Aha, OK.
- Yeah..
- And when we can say the weather is more sunny (or: sunnier), I don’t know if I can so say in English: sunnier or not, yeah… (laugh) But you can understand me.
- I understand. I think maybe about March… And you realise that the days are more of a normal length, and you don’t feel as if you…like most normal people go to work.
- Aha.
- And they’ll get up early in the morning in the dark… and by the time they come home it will be dark. It seems as if they can’t spend any time outdoors.
- Aha.
- And it’s only until.. it’s only by… about March or April that you feel as if you feel as if you can enjoy being outdoors without it being too cold or too dark.
- Aha.
- So, I guess March or April.
- And my last question: When do you recommend me, if I would like to visit Great Britain?
- Eh, well, I think you will probably enjoy it most during the summer.
- Aha.
- There are a lot of cultural events and things on. This summer in particular would have been a great time to come.
- Aha.
- Because we had the Olympics…
- Aha, of course!
- And lots of different events at the same time.
- Yeah.
- But yeah, the summer it’s more pleasant to be out for most people and there are more things going on.
- Aha.
- You can enjoy the parks and some of the nature. And yeah…and just strolling the streets and I mean also if you came during the summer I’d be able to say ‘hello!' to you because I don’t work during the summer.
- Thank you! (laugh) And what about the beginning of September because for example in Germany this season, this time is very beautiful and great, the beginning of September?..
- Yeah, what in Germany?..
- Yeah.
- Okay.
- But in London for example the weather in September is good or not so good?
- Well, you can’t really predict… It’s normally okay, it’s normally okay.
- Aha.
- There’re hints that you know it’s going to be bad soon. It depends. This year it was quite warm. Last year it was very hot. So, you see you can’t predict it. Normally it’s quite nice in September.
- OK.
Thank you!
Thank you, Joe! It was interesting for me to know about the weather in Great Britain. Thank you!
- That’s no problem at all
- OK, bye-bye!
- Bye-Bye!
