Answer:
it depends on what KIND of bullet , its velocity and how close the shooter is and the projectile is passing by you. it ranges from a type of hiss in the air to a whine , to a “crack” to a roar. and then also the persons OWN concept of the sound it makes. It differs from one to another. some never acknowledge even hearing it at all. you would have to be several 100 meters away from where the shot was coming from in order for the sound of the shot..then the crack of it breaking the sound barrier (IF it broke it), to be separated from the sound it will make passing by. several 100 meters, as in at least 500 or more. the sound a 50 BMG round passing over head, fired from 300 or so yards away, cant really be separated from the actual sound made as it fires. if you hear it passing by just before you hear the sound it made being fired, you are pretty far away. not too mention the Doppler effect. but again it really depends on the person hearing it and what the circumstances are, what mindset they are in etc. everyone's opinions can differ. some say you don't hear the one that hits you OR the sound of it being shot. ..i heard one of the ones that hit me. and those that ive heard going by were “whizzing/”whining” but then again different people different perspectives.
