Narrow Escape of Many In Bridge Collapse
Seven people were injured and many vehicles damaged when Saki Bridge collapsed at Jagraon crossing. Fortunately no one passing over and under it when it collapsed at around 5:15 p.m. last evening. Some people and passers-by were injured, and a few vehicles parked near it were damaged badly.
The injured ones were rushed to the hospital nearby and all of them have been reported out of danger. The PWD engineers have reached the site and analyzed the situation and cause behind the collapse. The Bridge was quite old and needed major reconstruction. Once again the recklessness of the Government departments have come to the fore.
The CM of the state visited the hospital and announced compensation of rupees 50000/- to those injured in the collapse along with free treatment at the hospital.

Kolkata: A portion of Majerhat Bridge has collapsed in Kolkata following heavy rainfall in the state capital on Tuesday. According to media reports, one person died and 19 people who were trapped in the debris were rescued by the NDRF and Kolkata police in a joint rescue operation. The bridge which is located in South Kolkata had collapsed after heavy rainfall in the state capital. The 40-year-old bridge which was built by Port Trust of India caved in around 4.45 pm in the crowded Alipore area. It runs over the Majerhat Railway Station and connects the city centre to Behala and other southern suburbs.
According to the official estimate, 21 people were injured in the accident and were taken to SSKM Medical College and Hospital and CMRI Hospital. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered a high-level probe to ascertain the reason behind this mishap. Rescue operations were hit due to rainfall in the evening and the state government made additional lighting arrangements for rescue ops to continue.
