Esterification is a process in which ester is formed an alcohol and a carboxylic acid. It is sometimes referred to as Fischer esterification which is when excess alcohol reacts with carboxylic acid. This reaction is normally carried out in the presence of hydrochloric acid which is essentially used as a catalyst.

The mechanism of this reaction nucleophilic addition-elimination reaction.

For example CH3CH2OH + CH3COOH ⇒CH3COOCH2CH3
