The rose smells sweet. The rose has a nice, sweet fragrance. The word ‘sweet’ (adjective) describes the Rose. There is no subject here to do the action of smelling. That is, no one is smelling the rose. Nor the rose is smelling anything. No subject; no object. Smell is a linking verb ( copular verb) here which links the rose to its complement sweet.
