Given : the observations 5,10,8,2 and 7 shows the no of defective units found during 5 inspections in a laboratory.

To Find : Mean

Solution:

observations 5,10,8,2 and 7

Mean = ( 5 + 10 + 8 + 2 + 7 )/ 5  = 6.4

xi        xi - Mean    (xi - Mean)²

5          -1.4               1.96

10         3.6              12.96

8          1.6               2.56

2          -4.4             19.36

7          0.6                0.36

                               37.2

Variance  =    37.2/5  = 7.44
