The Surat Split was the splitting of the Indian National Congress into two groups - the Extremists and the Moderates - at the Surat session in 1907. The moderates wanted "ras Bihari Ghosh"as president of the Indian National Congress and radicals wanted "Lala Lajpat Rai" as president. The growing differences between the Moderates and the Extremists came at Surat Session 1907,when against the wishes of Extremists who preferred Lala Lajpat Rai to be the President ; Dr. Rash Bihari Ghosh was elected as the Congress President.
