With reference to Scotland and Ireland, explain how Britain nationalism grew at the cost of other cultures.

During 18th century, there was no British nation.The English, Welsh,Scot and Irish inhabited the British Isles.

1) All the ethnic groups had their own culture and political traditions.
2)The English parliament grew, wealth and power of the English grew; with England at center a nation state began to be formed.
3) The United Kingdom of Great Britain was formed as a result of Act of Union (1707) between England and Scotland.
4) The British parliament was dominated by English members, they suppressed  the Scottish ; their political traditions and culture was lost,The Scottish highlands were stopped from practicing Catholic church,they were forbidden to speak their Gaelic language, prevented from wearing traditional dresses.

5) Even Ireland was suppressed. The Protestants gained control over much larger Catholic population with the help of British.
6) The revolts by Catholics failed. After the revolt by Wolf Torne and his Irishmen ,Ireland was forcibly incorporated into United Kingdom (1801).
7) The rise of British symbols led to the decline of Scottish and Irish traditions and culture.

Britain grew at the cost of other nations.
