~ Why Ashoka's Dhamma was not a religious code of conduct for citizens ? ::

• The Dhamma, which was formulated by Ashoka was not a new religion introduced to people. Neither it was a political or economic policy. Rather than all these, it was a code of conduct and a set of principles for life which was to be adopted and followed by people at a greater scale. This code of conduct taught people how to follow and respect a religion.

•Though Ashoka adopted Buddhism himself but his main intention was to popularise a pure religious feeling among people so that they can live optimistically.

Dhamma is a word derived from a Sanskrit root word 'Dharma'. Ashoka's Dhamma was a 'way of life' which didn't involve any worship to god or sacrifices.

•It was like teachings which a father gives to his son depicting how to lead a balanced life. Hence, this proves that it wasn't a religious code of conduct.

~ Did really Ashoka appoint officials for teaching people about Dhamma ? ::

• Yes, Ashoka appointed officials for teaching people about Dhamma. The reason was because, during that time there were many seperate kingdoms and territories.

• Even there were many different types of people who followed different religious practices. This made popularisation of Dhamma a great task.

• So Ashoka appointed officials who spread the teachings of Dhamma to people so that they can learn about this.

~ Did Ashoka sent messengers to the other nations to popularise it ::

He appointed the officials as 'Dhamma Mahamattas' who went different places like Sri Lanka, Egypt, Syria, Greece to spread his religion. Even he sent his son Mahendra and daughter Sanghamitra to Sri Lanka to spread his Dhamma.
