With reference to the poem, 'I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings", how can the poet (Maya Angelou) be compared to the caged bird ?

Since the poet belonged to Africa under the blacks. So she was caged like the bird. She couldn't get another breeze like the whites neither was she free. But still she fought for her freedom with hope. Only freedom she had was her 'voice' like the bird.

The main theme of the poem was hope,freedom and slavery.
