a.) The Indian farmers became impoverished because of the following reasons :
• Land taxes were raised.
b.) Awadh (1856) is widely believed to have been conquered under the doctrine of lapse. However it was annexed by Lord Dalhousie under the pretext of misgovernance.
c.) Nana Saheb was the adopted son of last peshwa - Bajirao II. Nama Saheb had enormous wealth which he inherited but he utilised that in sending his missionaries in different parts of the country to mobilise support for the revolt. Hence Nana Saheb was annoyed.
d.) General Service Enlistment Act was passed in 1856 contained provision that mandated soldiers or recruits of Bengal Army to serve within or outside India when ordered.
