Archaeological evidence indicates that the Great Bath was built in the 3rd millennium BCE, soon after the raising of the "citadel" mound on which it is located.

The great bath is the most important structure in Mohenjodaro.
- It has gates from North, South and Eastern sides for entry.
- The floor of the pond was made from plain bricks. The bonding of bricks was done by gypsum and bituminous.
- Flights of steps were made on Northern and Southern sides for entry into the pool.
- There was a chamber nearby which had a well. Water was filled in this pond from this well.
- It measures 11.88 × 7.01 metres and 2.43 metres deep.
- An outlet from corner of the bath led to the drain.
- As many believe it was used for ritual bathing.
