In the essay, Shaw exemplifies the disastrous nature of Capitalism on the human mind. Shaw uses the example of the pinmakers to highlight his opinion. The pinmakers have a complete knowledge of making, buying and selling the product door to door in earlier times. But with the coming of Capitalism, the work of making the pin is split into parts and assigned to 18 different men and everyone does their bit of the job. This results in no one having a complete knowledge of making the pin. Capitalism made the society affluent, but it turned men into mere machines doing their work without intelligence. Capitalism led to accumulation of wealth, progress, development and advancement, but it actually caused the humankind to lose its skill and knowledge of the work they are performing.
