with respect to Air the refractive index of ice is 1.31 and that of diamond is 2.42 calculate the refractive index of Diamond with respect to ice

Refractive Index = Speed of Light in air / Speed of light in that substance

=> Refractive Index of Ice = Speed of light in air ( c ) / Speed of light in ice

=> 1.31 = c / Speed of light in ice

=> Speed of light in ice = c / 1.31   ...( 1 )

Also,

=> Refractive Index of Diamond = c / Speed of light in diamond

=> 2.42 = c / Speed of light in diamond

=> Speed of light in diamond = c / 2.42   ... ( 2 )

Now,

Refractive index of Diamond respect to ice = Speed of light in ice / Speed in Diamond

=> Refractive Index = c / 1.31/ c / 2.42

=> Refractive index = 2.42 / 1.31 = 1.84

Hence Refractive index of Diamond with respect to ice is 1.84.
