The struggle for India’s independence actually began with the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 – 58 in Meerut, which soon spread to Delhi, Agra, Lucknow and Kanpur. Though this rebellion was put down by the British, the need for freedom stayed on like a festering wound in the Indian psyche.
In 1929, the Indian National Congress started the civil disobedience movement against the British.
The Second World War during 1939 – 45, saw Britain dragging India into the war unnecessarily, which further strengthened the resolve of Indians to be free, until finally in 1947, Britain passed an Act in the Parliament, creating the two new independent countries of India and Pakistan.
