The national Capital witnessed heavy rainfall on Monday, bringing down the minimum temperature to 25 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal for this time of the year.
Due to the change in the season, doctors in the city are witnessing a spurt in the number of cases related to humid weather and waterborne diseases “There is a blend of patients complaining about various types of diseases. We are witnessing a rise in the cases of typhoid, malaria, food poisoning, dehydration and jaundice,” said Dr SP Byotra, senior consultant and head of the department of Internal medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital
People with prolonged illness are likely to get more affected in this transitional period.
“All those who have low immunity power or asthmatic patients are more prone to these problems in this season. The symptoms of monsoon diseases are mostly common like fever, cough, cold, headache, throat infection and stomach infection. If taken precautions, one can enjoy this season. Drinking water outside should be avoided. Eating stale food or which have been kept in open for long should be avoided,” said Dr RK Singal, Principal Consultant & Director, Internal Medicine, BLK Super Speciality Hospital.
Malaria is caused by a parasite that is passed from one human to another by the bite of an infected mosquito. There are two types of malaria - Falciparum and Vivax. While the former is more common and curable, the latter is dangerous and may lead to death if not properly treated.

Recently Malaria has broken out in an epidemic form in Behala, my locality. At least 500 people were afflicted with the disease and as many as 18 people died in last five days. The number of victims is likely to raise as most of them are still in a critical condition in different hospitals in town. The entire locality has been declared epidemic zone. The resurgence of malignant malaria in town is a great concern to the administration. However, the outbreak of this deadly disease has created an unprecedented panic in the town. Rallies are being held in protest against the indifference of the administration. Preventive measures should be taken as much fast as possible. The local person should be much aware of this. And the administration should take steps for proper sanitization in the locality. Hospital beds should be increased fast. Proper treatment can prevent this disease. However, the administration has been trying hard to bring back normalcy in the affected locality by renovating the drainage system.
