Earth is the only planet in the Solar System known to support life. This is because we are at just the right distance from the Sun so that our planet doesn't get too hot or too cold. We also have one moon – the Moon. Mars – Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, and is much smaller and colder than the Earth.

The Solar System is the gravitationally bound system of the Sun and the objects that orbit it, either directly or indirectly. Of the objects that orbit the Sun directly, the largest are the eight planets, with the remainder being smaller objects, the dwarf planets and small Solar System bodies.

  • System mass: 1.0014 Solar masses
  • Nearest known planetary system: Proxima Centauri system (4.25 ly)
  • Known minor planets: 796,354

The solar system consists of the Sun and everything that orbits, or travels around, the Sun. This includes the eight planets and their moons, dwarf planets, and countless asteroids, comets, and other small, icy objects.
