The three types of tectonic movements are:

  1. Convergent Movement
  2. Divergent Movement
  3. Transform Movement

Explanation:

  • It is well-known that Earth comprises of seven large tectonic plates and several small tectonic plates.
  • These plates tend to move in various directions depending upon the cause of the movement.
  • These movements are termed as tectonic movements and are mainly of three types;
  1. Convergent movement
  2. Divergent movement
  3. Transform movement
  • The topic that deals with these tectonic movements is termed as "Plate Tectonics".
  • Plate tectonics is of utmost importance as these tectonic movements tend to cause earthquakes, tsunamis, etc...
  • The main cause of the tectonic movements is thermal convection.

Convergent Movement:

  • Convergent movement of tectonic plates occur when two adjacent tectonic plates move towards each other.
  • Due to this, the edges of the plates may buckle up into mountain ranges or bend down to form trenches.
  • The boundary between the two plates is called as "Convergent boundary".

Divergent Movement:

  • Divergent movement of tectonic plates occur when two adjacent plates move away from each other.
  • Due to this, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
  • In this case, the boundary between the two plates is called as "Divergent boundary".

Transform Movement:

  • Transform movement occurs when the two tectonic plates slide past each other.
  • The boundary between these plates is termed as "Transform boundary".

Note: An image representing the diagrams of these movements is attached with the solution.
