The three types of tectonic movements are:
- Convergent Movement
- Divergent Movement
- Transform Movement
Explanation:
- It is well-known that Earth comprises of seven large tectonic plates and several small tectonic plates.
- These plates tend to move in various directions depending upon the cause of the movement.
- These movements are termed as tectonic movements and are mainly of three types;
- Convergent movement
- Divergent movement
- Transform movement
- The topic that deals with these tectonic movements is termed as "Plate Tectonics".
- Plate tectonics is of utmost importance as these tectonic movements tend to cause earthquakes, tsunamis, etc...
- The main cause of the tectonic movements is thermal convection.
Convergent Movement:
- Convergent movement of tectonic plates occur when two adjacent tectonic plates move towards each other.
- Due to this, the edges of the plates may buckle up into mountain ranges or bend down to form trenches.
- The boundary between the two plates is called as "Convergent boundary".
Divergent Movement:
- Divergent movement of tectonic plates occur when two adjacent plates move away from each other.
- Due to this, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
- In this case, the boundary between the two plates is called as "Divergent boundary".
Transform Movement:
- Transform movement occurs when the two tectonic plates slide past each other.
- The boundary between these plates is termed as "Transform boundary".
Note: An image representing the diagrams of these movements is attached with the solution.
