distance is actual path covered by an a object for eg. in a straight lime motion from A to B and then B to A is total distance that is AB +BA.it cannot be negative so it thats why it is not taken negatives from B to A
DISPLACEMENT is the shortest path.it can be negative for eg.from A to B displacement is AB and from B to A is is -AB because it is in opposite motion.
