The initiation of  flower primordia is a major event in the life cycle of a plant which involve shift in the phase of development from vegetative to reproductive process. To initiate floral primordia, the plant must complete a period of vegetative growth or attain some minimal leaf number. If this condition is attained then the plant are said to be ripe to flower. Attainment of the ripe to flower condition does not lead to the initiation of flower primordial,  it has to follow certain environment condition. If same environmental conditions is presented to a plant which is not ripe to flower, elicit no flowering response. The importance of temperature and the promotion of reproductive development, such phenomenon is referred to as vernalisation.

The process of primordia development is regulated by a set of genes. The plant hormone auxin has also been implicated in this process with the new primordia being initiated at the placenta where the auxin concentration is highest. Leaf primordia are group of cells that will form into new leaves which form near the top of the shoot. Flower primordia are the little buds that are form at the end of stems, from which flower develop.
