When labeled as biosphere reserve, the site is under special management and the government directs the research and education activities in such conservation. They are designed in such way to promote sustainable use of natural resources.

The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is an International Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats and Nilgiri Hills ranges of South India.
