The labelled diagram shows here how light travels from a denser medium to a lighter one.
when light falls upon a medium, it bent down only at the interface between two transparent materials of different density. When Light is passing through a less dense to a more dense medium it bends toward the normal. And when Light is passing through a denser medium to a lighter medium it bends away from the normal.

REFRACTION OF LIGHT
- The phenomenon is explained as the bending of the light rays when they travel from one medium into another medium of different densities.
- When light travels from a denser to a rarer medium, the refracted rays bend away from the normal.
- When light travels from rarer to a denser medium, refracted light ray bends toward the normal.
- This occurs due to the change in the speed of the light rays with respect to the mediums of different densities.
- As given in the figure, when a light ray enters the rarer medium it will bend away from the normal due to the increase in the speed with the decrease in the density of the medium.
