We can prove copper is less reactive than iron by the following activity:

Take a solution of Copper Sulphate (CuSO4) in water in a beaker. In this beaker dip an iron nail and leave it for some time.
After some time you will notice the colour of the solution changes from blue to green, indicating Ferrous Sulphate has been formed (FeSO4). A coating of copper will occur on the nail. Hence iron has displaced copper from its salt solution and hence it is more reactive.

The equation is:
CuSO4 + Fe => FeSO4 + Cu

To show that iron is more reactive than copper-

  • At first prepare a solution of copper sulphate by dissolving copper sulphates crystals in water.
  • We will get a blue colored solution.
  • Now, keep an iron nail dipped in this solution.
  • After sometime we will see that the colour of solution changes to dirty green and a reddish-brown powder sticks to the nail.
  • Copper in copper sulphate is displaced by iron of the nail, and iron sulphate is formed which is green in colour.
  • Thus, it shows that iron is more reactive than copper.

The reaction can be written as-

 \rm { Fe_{(iron)} + CuSO_{4(copper \: sulphate)} \longrightarrow FeSo_{4(iron \: sulphate)} + Cu }
