Aim of the experiment -

To show that non metals react with oxygen to form non metallic oxides which are acidic in nature.

Materials required -

Charcoal, deflagrating spoon, glass jar, lid, blue litmus paper, watch glass.

Procedure -

Small piece of charcoal was taken in a deflagrating spoon and it was ignited.

The spoon was put in a glass jar and was covered by a lid.

After sometime, the spoon was removed from the jar.

Water was added in the jar and it was covered.

The contents were mixed by shaking them properly.

The solution was poured in a watch glass.

The blue litmus paper was dipped in it.

Observation -

The blue litmus paper turned into red.

Conclusion -

The solution is acidic. The charcoal (carbon) burn in presence of oxygen to form Carbon Dioxide gas that get dissolved in watercto form an acid called carbonic acid.

Precautions -

Keep your hands safe from the solution during the experiment
