The formation of spores occurs in a reproductive structure known as sporangia. Spore formation occurs via meiosis as well as via mitosis.

In case of meiotic sporogenesis, the diploid spore mother cell divide by meiosis to form haploid spores. Two types of spores are formed-male microspores and female microspores. In some fungi and algae, spores are formed via a mitosis known as mitospores.

Some bacteria, fungi also produces resting spores known as dormant spores, which helps to survive unfavourable conditions.
