Example:

Ethene gives ethane as a product on hydrogenation.

Conditions for hydrogenation:

(1) Unsaturated compound i.e., unsaturated hydrocarbon should be present.

(2) Presence of a catalyst such as finely divided palladium or nickle.

During hydrogenation of vegetable oils, liquid unsaturated fatty acids are converted into solid saturated fatty acids.
