Expansion and contraction takes places in solids and  found these cause:

1) when substance expands or contract, the particles stay the the same size.

2) only the space between the particles changes.

3)The particles in the solid takes more space when it heated thud it takes more room

example of the Expansion and the Contraction are a follows;

Expansion:

Railway track consist f two parallel track together with small gap known as the expansion gap are deliberately because in the hot weather the rail would expand.

Contraction:

If we hold the hot glass tumbler in the cold water the tumbler cracks because the outer surface of the glass meets directly the cold water and contract more as compared as the inner surface.
